BridgeDetroit has spent 8 months talking to teens about what they need from their city. Here’s what we learned.

August 28, 2026

BridgeDetroit's Engagement Editor describes a youth-focused initiative that occupied much of 2026, stemming from an American Press Institute conference and subsequent grant funding. The newsroom visited numerous high schools to discuss journalism and distributed a survey to teenagers about Detroit's future, collecting responses from over 400 students on topics including city government, public safety, and employment opportunities. The organization also established a Youth Ambassador program where three young people created videos promoting news and civic information to their peers.

Who is affected

  • Detroit teenagers aged 13-19
  • BridgeDetroit newsroom staff (Engagement Editor Bryce Huffman and Education reporter Micah Walker)
  • High school students in Detroit who participated in classroom visits
  • Youth Ambassadors (Zyana, Kyndall, and Justin)
  • The editor's former middle school students

What action is being taken

  • Over 400 students have taken the Youth Engagement Survey
  • The Youth Ambassadors are producing videos for Instagram to spread awareness of news and civic information to Detroit teens
  • BridgeDetroit is conducting coverage shaped by youth survey results
  • The newsroom is interviewing young people for stories

Why it matters

  • This initiative empowers Detroit teenagers to shape their own narrative about the city's victories, losses, and future opportunities. It provides young people with avenues to express themselves and equips them with knowledge to make informed decisions and voice opinions confidently, even when adults may disagree. The work ensures that the next generation of decision-makers has the civic engagement skills and confidence necessary to lead effectively.
