Free student bus fare in Oakland, Wayne Macomb counties starts May 1

April 30, 2026

The Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation (SMART) will begin offering free year-round bus rides to students in the Detroit metropolitan area starting in May. Students from kindergarten through university level can access this service by simply presenting their valid student identification cards. The initiative was developed through collaboration between Detroit and surrounding Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb county leaders to address transportation barriers that prevent students from attending classes and accessing job opportunities.

Who is affected

  • K-12 students (public, private, and charter school students)
  • Community college students
  • University students (four-year universities)
  • Students enrolled in accredited educational institutions in Oakland, Macomb, and Wayne counties
  • Over 50,000 credit and non-credit students at Wayne County Community College District
  • Families with students who previously paid transit fares

What action is being taken

  • SMART is implementing a free bus program starting in May for students who show valid student IDs
  • Detroit city buses are currently running an initiative (kicked off earlier this month) allowing school students to ride free of charge

Why it matters

  • This program addresses critical barriers to education and employment by ensuring students without household vehicles can access classes, internships, and jobs. Transportation costs represent a significant monthly expense for many families, and lack of affordable transit can result in missed classes and students falling behind academically. By eliminating this financial barrier for students using SMART's system (which serves approximately 9 million riders annually), the initiative helps ensure that economic circumstances don't prevent educational achievement and workforce participation.

What's next
