Nearly 200 people massacred by gunmen in Kaiama LGA, Nigeria

February 24, 2026

A splinter group of Boko Haram attacked two villages in Kwara State, Nigeria, on February 3-4, 2026, killing approximately 75-200 people who refused to adopt the group's extremist Islamic ideology. The attackers, followers of Mahmuda who operate from Kainji Lake National Park, terrorized the communities of Woro and Nuku for nearly 24 hours, also abducting residents and destroying property. This massacre was part of a broader pattern of deadly attacks across north-central Nigeria, with three separate incidents occurring on the same day in different states.

Who is affected

  • Residents of Woro and Nuku villages in Kaiama Local Government Area, Kwara State (75-200 killed, many abducted)
  • 19 villagers killed in Doma town, Faskari Local Government, Katsina State
  • One police officer and four villagers killed in Abande Community, Kwande Local Government, Benue State
  • 163 worshippers kidnapped from two churches in Kaduna state on January 18, 2026
  • Rural communities across north-central Nigeria surrounding Kainji Lake National Park
  • Traditional ruler Alhaji Muaza Sheu Omar (Emir of Kaiama) and his subjects

What action is being taken

  • The Nigerian government is providing support for victims and working to restore calm and order to the affected area
  • President Tinubu has launched Operation Savanna Shield
  • An army battalion is being deployed to Kaiama
  • A seven-person committee has been appointed to provide humanitarian support for the victims
  • Security is being increased in the area
  • Communities are searching for and recovering bodies

Why it matters

  • This massacre represents an escalation in ideological violence where terrorists are targeting civilians specifically for rejecting extremist beliefs, rather than solely for ransom as in previous kidnapping patterns. The attacks expose critical security failures in rural Nigeria, including porous borders, reactive rather than proactive security measures, and government neglect of warning signs that terrorists had been sending for over five months. The continued boldness of the terror group despite their leader's arrest demonstrates the growing threat to vulnerable rural communities across north-central Nigeria, with the potential for these groups to overrun entire regions if adequate security measures are not implemented.

What's next

  • The new military command deployed to the area is commanded to "checkmate the barbaric terrorists and protect defenceless communities" through Operation Savanna Shield
  • Authorities are to effectively investigate the attacks
  • Additional actions are to be taken to protect lives of people living in the area
  • The seven-person committee will provide humanitarian support for victims
  • Security measures in the area around Kainji National Park are to be increased
