A judge has ruled that a civil lawsuit against actor Alec Baldwin stemming from a fatal 2021 shooting on the set of the film Rust can proceed to trial. The lawsuit was brought by lighting technician Serge Svetnoy, who alleges Baldwin and the production company were negligent regarding gun safety protocols when a prop gun fired a live round, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins and injuring the director. Although a criminal case against Baldwin was dismissed in 2024 due to prosecutors withholding evidence from the defense, the civil case will move forward with claims of negligence and emotional distress.
