BasBlue Expands Its Community Care Work With Weekly Suppers for Detroit Families

November 21, 2025

BasBlue, a Detroit community hub supporting women and gender-diverse individuals, has launched a free weekly Community Supper program to address growing food insecurity affecting city residents. The initiative responds to increased grocery costs, reduced SNAP benefits, and strained household budgets by offering complimentary Monday dinners from 5-7 p. m.

Who is affected

  • Detroit families navigating higher grocery prices and reduced SNAP support, parents managing tight budgets, elders seeking safe gathering spaces, working residents facing food insecurity, children needing reliable meals, residents living alone, and households making difficult choices about meeting daily food needs.

What action is being taken

  • BasBlue is hosting free Community Suppers every Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at 110 East Ferry Street. Detroit chefs (Chef Rohani of Folk Detroit, Chef Mamba of Baobab Fare, and Chefs Nic and Chi of Fried Chicken and Caviar) are preparing weekly meals with rotating menus. Volunteers and staff are serving hot, plated meals without requiring paperwork or qualifications. The organization is encouraging residents to share information about the program with others who may benefit.

Why it matters

  • The program addresses urgent food insecurity as Detroit households struggle with rising costs and reduced federal benefits, forcing families into difficult choices about basic needs. It provides a reliable, dignified resource that eliminates barriers to access while strengthening Detroit's tradition of community-based support systems filling gaps where structural support falls short. The initiative creates stability for families juggling multiple pressures while fostering community connection and belonging during a period of heightened need.

What's next

  • BasBlue plans to continue hosting the Community Supper throughout the year with ongoing support from its culinary partners and volunteers.
