Memorial Day, observed on the last Monday of May, originated after the Civil War to honor fallen U.S. service members but has transformed significantly over time into a holiday marking summer's unofficial start. The holiday's roots trace back to post-Civil War decoration of soldiers' graves, with contested claims about the first observance involving communities from New York to South Carolina, including a significant 1865 event organized largely by Black Americans in Charleston.
