Demond Wilson, the actor who portrayed Lamont Sanford alongside Redd Foxx in the groundbreaking 1970s sitcom "Sanford and Son," has passed away at age 79 from cancer-related complications. Wilson, who grew up in Harlem and served as a wounded Vietnam War veteran, landed his iconic role as the patient son to Foxx's cantankerous junk dealer after convincing producers they needed a straight man rather than another comedian like Richard Pryor. Though he appeared in other television shows and films after the sitcom ended in 1978, Wilson eventually found acting emotionally unfulfilling and transitioned to ministry work in the 1980s.
