San Diego County implemented a free summer meal program for children and teenagers up to age 18 while schools were closed for summer break. Through a collaborative effort involving the City of San Diego, San Diego Unified School District, and local parks, libraries, and recreation facilities, meals were distributed at more than 40 locations throughout the county. The initiative went beyond simply providing nutrition by incorporating educational activities and enrichment opportunities at certain sites.
