Students Lead Fourth Annual Ruby Bridges Walk To School Day

December 3, 2025

On November 14, hundreds of participants from three San Diego schools—Gage Elementary, Pershing Middle, and Patrick Henry High School—gathered for their fourth annual Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day event. Around 400 students, families, and community members wore purple shirts and carried lunchboxes while walking to school at 7:20 a. m.

Who is affected

  • Students from Gage Elementary, Pershing Middle, and Patrick Henry High School
  • Students from Hamilton and Ibarra Elementary schools
  • Families and community members from these schools (approximately 400 total attendees)
  • San Diego Unified School District

What action is being taken

  • Students are walking to school dressed in purple shirts and carrying lunchboxes
  • Students are leading reflections, creating art, and facilitating conversations about inclusion
  • San Diego Unified is empowering students to build inclusive school environments and strengthen community connections

Why it matters

  • This event matters because it provides a tangible way for students to learn about and honor the history of school integration and civil rights activism. By commemorating Ruby Bridges' courageous act as a six-year-old child who helped desegregate schools, students engage directly with themes of equity, inclusion, and diversity while taking active leadership roles in promoting these values within their own educational communities.
