Harbor View Restorative Renaming Circles

August 26, 2026

San Diego Continuing Education (SDCCE) has launched "Campus Built Together," a community initiative to rename its Harbor View Campus through a restorative justice approach. The college is organizing facilitated discussion sessions starting September 3rd, led by restorative justice practitioners Nina Harris and Duke Fisher, where community members can share perspectives on potential names. Additional naming circles will occur throughout September and October at various locations, and participants will also receive surveys to contribute input.

Who is affected

  • SDCCE Harbor View Campus community (students, faculty, staff)
  • Surrounding neighborhood residents of the Harbor View Campus area
  • SDCCE Executive President's Cabinet
  • DEIAA Coordinator Esteban Alvarado
  • Professional Development Coordinator Carla Grossini-Concha
  • Research Planning and Institutional Effectiveness Dean Luedtke
  • Associate Dean Jesus Rivas
  • Restorative Justice Practitioners Nina Harris and Duke Fisher

What action is being taken

  • Launching the "Campus Built Together" campaign to identify a new permanent name
  • Organizing two restorative renaming sessions on September 3 (2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m.)
  • Creating a Campus Built Together landing page with information about the process
  • Scheduling additional renaming circles for late-September and early-October at multiple locations

Why it matters

  • This initiative represents a significant institutional commitment to inclusive decision-making by centering community voices in determining the campus identity. The restorative justice framework ensures that the renaming process acknowledges diverse perspectives and experiences while building community cohesion. By selecting a name that reflects the people, history, and community the campus serves, SDCCE aims to create stronger connections between the institution and its stakeholders, fostering a sense of ownership and belonging among all participants.

What's next

  • Attend restorative renaming sessions on September 3 at Harbor View Campus
  • Participate in additional Harbor View Restorative Renaming Circles scheduled for late-September and early-October at Harbor View Campus, Mid-City Campus, and via Zoom
  • Complete a survey (link to be distributed) to share perspectives on the campus name
  • Identify a permanent campus name by the end of the fall semester
