In 1989, Alan Swanson and Willie Bennett, two Black men, were wrongly accused of killing Carol Stuart, a pregnant white woman in Boston, when in fact her husband Charles Stuart had orchestrated the murder. The settlement comes two years after Boston Mayor Michelle Wu issued a formal apology for the injustice they suffered and the harm caused to the Black community.
